From what we experienced, there were no other board sports companies operating in the online market. Board sports goods were either sold in brick & mortar locations or by mail order. Persuading major companies to sell to us was quite a challenge. Why you ask? Because they didn't really understand the internet and the potential that it held. We approached every major brand you can think of, and most just didn't get it. It's laughable now, but back then, it was a real challenge. I owe much of my sales and negotiating skills to that aspect alone. We actively sourced year-end closeouts from major manufacturers and distributors to sale at wholesale pricing as well. This method was extremely successful and our basic business model. At this time there were no business models to follow for online board sports stores, we had to develop and innovate our own methods to fit our needs. Negotiating sales contracts and pricing was amongst my favorite tasks. I loved the challenge of it (still do) and the feeling of success when vendors would meet our price points. Marketing was another major part of BMBS success. Our guerilla marketing tactics appealed heavily to our target audience, and created a loud buzz in our local community creating quick success and loyal customers. Running BMBS was an amazing experience and instrumental to my real life education in business development, processes, negotiating, sales, and technology. In fact, BMBS is what drove me to pursue a career in technology, and eventually manufacturing, inventory control, and supply chain management. Show less
