About Mackenzie Abts
I am currently an aquarist in the World of Water (WOW) at the McWane Science Center. My responsibilities include: monitoring the diet and well-being of all WOW animals, installing and maintaining aquarium equipment, and conducting water chemistry of all habitats. I am also a recent magna sum laude graduate from the University of North Alabama (UNA) where I obtained my Bachelor of Science with a major in Biology, and minors in Chemistry and Earth Sustainability. I previously participated in a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program at Duke University Marine Lab (DUML). During my time at these universities, I gained experience in DNA sequencing and analysis of various organisms, from culture samples of subterranean bacteria at UNA to eDNA samples from coastal dolphins at DUML. Additionally, I have an exceptional understanding of general chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry, and hope to be able to apply that knowledge to research soon. During my time at UNA, I also became the president of UNA's sustainability club: Project Earth, the president of UNA's student chapter of the American Chemical Society, and a member of the Tri-Beta Honors Society. Through these groups, I was able to conduct local environmental clean-ups, establish a study lounge for students, and inform students about research opportunities on and off campus. I am looking forward to furthering my scientific knowledge and skills in the workforce.
