Our goal was to explore new interests and mediums as we found our voices as artists and inspected how we connect to our world. Teaching specific units and semester long classes during full-time teaching hours —During this time I taught 3 Freshman units, 1 Sophomore unit, and all 3 Senior units. I adapted lesson plans and curriculum to incorporate my teaching style, insights I had been gaining during observations and assisting hours, and current student interests. One of the engaging activities that we incorporated into student learning was visiting the Boston Museum of Fine Arts where we spent 1 hour each week drawing in different exhibits throughout the MFA. This activity spanned 5 weeks and helped students get out into the community to embrace a “world as your classroom approach.” Creating Community Alchemy —Something I really enjoy is being part of a team and a community. One of the things I focused on during my time at BAA were "Think Spaces." I created 2 spaces in total — a student centered classroom Think Space and a “Teacher Think Space” in one of our staff teacher’s lounges. While both spaces were designed intentionally to meet the needs of each group — both had art activities, mental health check-ins, fidget devices, activities to encourage healthy coping practices, books and materials to identify and regulate emotions, and a variety of books. These safe spaces were meant to facilitate conversation, help folks check-in with themselves, and provide outlets for folks to attune to their needs so they can return to class engaged and ready to learn.
