I work for the Geographic Information Science and Technology group on the Settlement Mapper Tool, which automatically identifies inhabited areas in satellite images using computer vision techniques. My responsibilities include refactoring CUDA GPU C/C++ code and python scripts, and improving the use of machine learning and vegetation indices for identifying inhabited structures in satellite imagery.I also organized a postdoc writer's group for the Oak Ridge Postdoctoral Association (ORPA) that meets weekly. The writer's group provides dedicated space and time for ORNL postdocs to finish publications and to review works-in-progress.

I researched the reliability of Safecast, which is a Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) project where users publicly share radiation observations, by comparing Safecast observations made in the Fukushima Prefecture shortly after the 2011 nuclear disaster with Department of Energy (DOE) observations. I also developed a QuantumGIS (qgis) python plugin to gather tweets by geographic region for a grant sponsored by the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL). This plugin can be used to augment traditional sources of remotely sensed data as disaster assessment and emergency resource management decision making aids. I also provided geoinformatics data analytical support for research in Medicare usage related trends via a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant.I also taught a course on programming in GIS using ArcGIS and python in Spring and Summer of '15.I was also the Chair of the Penn State Postdoctoral Society, and as such was responsible for organizing career enhancement, personal improvement, and social activities for over 460 postdoctoral scholars.

While at George Mason University, I helped develop an evolutionary computation C++ toolkit; a biologically inspired cognitive model for a DARPA Grand Challenge; a Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization (JIEDDO) related multiagent simulation; an ONR Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI) Office sponsored massive multiagent simulation of pastoral and farming behavior in eastern Africa; and a geospatial extension, GeoMason, for the multi-agent simulation toolkit MASON.

Continued Spatial Data Transfer Standard (SDTS) support work at the United States Geological Survey (USGS). While there I supervised students and other software engineers who were on the development team. Moreover maintained an SDTS related software development mailing list and answer sdts++ related questions posted there. Wrote two translators, one a USGS Digital Orthophotoquad (DOQ) to SDTS encoder, and the other a USGS Digital Elevation Model (DEM) to SDTS encoder. Assisted in feature-oriented GIS research.

Worked on nautical geospatial visualization projects for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and implemented a 3D visualization tool for the U. S. Army Topographic Engineering Center. Worked at the USGS on SDTS related software development. To that end, helped design, implement, and maintain a public domain C++ toolkit, sdts++, for reading and writing SDTS datasets, and eventually became its technical lead.

Worked on an expert system to correct human sourced sea surface meteorological data for NOAA, an expert system for validating materiel purchases for the U. S. Army Material Command, and a road surface wear calculator for the Federal Highway Administration.
