About Michael Colyer

Three years ago, I gave up looking for the right camera. As a Specialist Cameras Engineer, I was lucky enough to combine my love of film with my passion for travel – working in over 25 countries on projects ranging from sports and reality TV across to documentaries (F1, Olympics, Tennis Grand Slams, Super Bowl – that sort of stuff). But the more I travelled, worked and learned– the worse this feeling I had started to become. Sure, during those years I captured some pretty cool stuff – but re-packaging existing products & cameras to get these ‘specialist’ shots always meant that what I built felt good, but never ideal. So right around my 30th birthday, I took a leap. I paused the travel – and started to re-design myself.Meeting some amazing people, I tenfold enhanced my skills in electronic design, PCB, and coding. I started working with FPGAs, writing my own hardware blocks for vision applications – somehow turning myself into a bigger nerd that I already was (much to the amusement of my friends). Now I have a strong foundation on which I can build the hardware to help people capture those special shots and tell their stories in a way not possible before, all built on plenty of field experience. (For example, building a camera trap system for wildlife documentaries that consumes less than one milliamp when it is asleep!). The best bit? This is just the start! I no longer have a reliance on re-packaging technologies. When the tech doesn’t exist? Make it!As I continue to learn, grow (and travel) – I’m loving what I do more than ever before. Having the skillset to help people tell their stories in new ways gives me that driving force to see where we can push things next. And hey – if you’ve got a weird story that needs need some special tech to help amplify it, do say hello!

Listed skills include Camera, Television, Video Production, Hd Video, and 14 others.

Freelance R And D And Broadcast Engineer

London, England, Gb

Speciality Capture Developer

Current

London, England, United Kingdom

In my current position at BSI, I have taken a full end-to-end design and development approach for novel sports broadcasting equipment - from initial ideas to the electronic schematic design and PCB layout, FPGA hardware development and software engineering. One part of my role I am very passionate about is image quality analysis (in fact, a lot of my academic studies are based around this); I've developed a suite of MATLAB-based scripts for full-reference objective assessment in a custom image lab I designed and built, adhering to standards and recommendations from EBU, ITU, and SMPTE. This process allows us to critically evaluate both our proprietary camera systems and off-the-shelf products, ensuring we consistently deliver superior image quality to our clients. Moreover, I play a key role in the practical deployment and integration of new products in the field. This includes providing support for innovative technologies like the slow-motion pylon camera system unveiled at the 2024 Super Bowl.

Mar 2021 - Present

Speciality Capture Developer

Current

London, England, United Kingdom

In tandem with my role at BSI, I also lend my skills to Fletcher, a part of NEP's Specialty Capture Division, on an on-demand basis. At Fletcher, my contributions include designing specialty camera systems for flagship events, such as the Winter Olympic Games in China. This project required a creative redesign of the initial rig to accommodate Covid-related specifications set by the client, complete with detailed CAD renderings of room layouts to ensure compliance and functionality. Beyond these large-scale endeavours, I've supported tennis events across the US and UK, including at the prestigious Wimbledon championships.

Mar 2021 - Present

Special Cameras Engineer

At Gravity Media, I was responsible for the design and deployment of custom special camera systems for a spectrum of broadcasts, from the hidden-camera robotics of reality TV shows like "I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!" and “Australian Ninja Warrior” to the live sports events including the 2018 Asian Games, US Open Tennis, and Australian Open Tennis. My role encompassed not only the design and installation of these cutting-edge systems but also guiding a dedicated team of engineers in rigging and maintaining them throughout each event. A key achievement was steering the company’s transition from serial-based camera control to a comprehensive IP system, significantly enhancing our remote production capabilities. In addition, in this role – I developed a prototype netcam system for use at Tennis events, showcasing Gravity’s push for innovation in sports broadcasting.

Apr 2016 - Mar 2021

Special Cameras Engineer

During two exciting full-season tours with Formula One, I was entrusted with developing, maintaining, and installing specialised camera systems trackside at racing events around the globe. This role demanded not only the development of new systems to add additional narratives to the F1 story - but also a keen eye for safety, requiring approval from relevant bodies due to the systems' volatile environments. Collaborating closely with race teams, I ensured that our cameras integrated seamlessly into pit stops without hindering pit crew performance, all while aligning with team branding for a visually cohesive presence.

Apr 2014 - Apr 2016

Project Engineer

London

As a Project Engineer at Procam, I spearheaded the development and execution of OB-style multi-camera projects and bespoke broadcast solutions (including hidden camera rigs), catering to events including the Scottish BAFTAs and live music concerts for Channel 4.My role extended beyond technical project management to include logistics like crew accommodations and transport, ensuring project operations from conception to completion.

Oct 2013 - Apr 2014

Technical Support / Mcr / Studio Engineer

Netplay Tv

In my first night shift role, I was the Technical Support/MCR/Studio Engineer at NetPlay TV. I supervised multiple studios and galleries, ensuring our live content reached audiences on both IP platforms and traditional TV broadcasting to ITV and Channel Five.

Mar 2013 - Oct 2013

Engineering Manager

London, United Kingdom

Jan 2013 - Aug 2013

Junior Engineer

London, United Kingdom

At Procam, my role spanned camera preparation, repairs, maintenance, and calibration, offering me a pivotal insight into a diverse spectrum of camera systems—from conventional ENG workhorses such as the Sony PDW-F800 to the cinematic prowess of the Sony F65. This position sharpened my ability to adapt to the vastly different needs of our clients, whether it was capturing the dynamic news environments for Al Jazeera or providing the polished visuals required by drama productions such as "Made in Chelsea."

Mar 2012 - Mar 2013

Camera Support & Utility, 2012 Olympic Games

London, United Kingdom

During the 2012 Olympic Games, I found myself in the "sun-soaked, idyllic" setting of Woolwich, tasked with camera rigging and technical troubleshooting. In this glamorous locale, I ensured uninterrupted coverage across various venues, contributing to the global broadcast of this monumental event.
