During the summer of 2013, I worked as a physician extender at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush University Hospital (MOR) under the direction of John Bojchuk, MS, ATC/L and Dr. Bernie Bach Jr., MD. My experience at MOR provided me the opportunity to improve my skills in taking patient histories, examining musculoskeletal injuries, and concisely reporting the findings to the attending physician. I gained experience fitting patients for crutches and braces, developing and ordering rehabilitation programs, educating patients, scheduling tests, preparing injections, and using NextGen software. I was able to complete over 100 hours of surgery observation where I learned about working in the sterile field, how grafts were prepared, and patient prep and positioning. I attended Grand Rounds and journal club where I learned to value the role an athletic trainer has in a clinical setting being able to speak the language of the doctor and the patient in order to provide the best possible experience and outcome.
