About Madalyn Howitt
I’m a multi-skilled journalist with experience covering urban Inuit and Arctic communities, local sports and 2020 Tokyo Olympic coverage, breaking news, arts and entertainment and politics. I love writing about education, popular culture and issues facing young Canadians. Some of my favourite stories I've researched and written have been a 3-part series on school maintenance issues in Nunavut, the coverage of a high-profile 6-month murder trial, an arts feature on the tattoo work of queer Inuit artists and in-person written and photographic coverage of the 2023 Arctic Winter Games in Alberta. I’ve curated daily e-newsletters and am well-versed in fact-checking and CP style. My work has appeared in Nunatsiaq News, the Globe and Mail, Maclean’s, This Magazine, Maisonneuve, The Ottawa Sports Pages and the Ottawa Business Journal. I especially love writing about education, popular culture and issues facing young Canadians. Before becoming a journalist I was an ESL teacher in Japan and later on an international cruise ship, which taught me how to work constructively and compassionately with others, as well as how to adapt quickly to new and exciting environments. It has also kept me dialled in to major stories happening beyond our borders and helped connect me with popular culture around the world. Some accomplishments I’m particularly proud of are becoming the first-ever Journalism graduate to be the Valedictorian for Algonquin College’s School of Media and Design, becoming the first-ever AC student to join the Globe and Mail’s academic internship program and becoming the first-ever direct-entry student to be Editor of the Algonquin Times. I speak French as a second language, a tiny bit of Japanese, and I love RuPaul's Drag Race, investigative documentaries, and my cats Poppy and Arthur. Hire me now for your reporting, editing or writing needs!
