Marked tortoise burrows near, and excavated burrows within construction right-of-ways. •Performed pre-project inventory surveys for Desert Tortoise and Mojave Fringed Toed Lizards.•Prepared daily field reports detailing activities occurring on work sites, as well as locations and circumstances surrounding encounters with protected species.•Monitored heavy equipment on construction projects working in desert tortoise habitat, and ensured compliance with the biological opinion for the projects. Cleared equipment before work began, and ensured no desert tortoises were harmed during construction work.•Prepared performance evaluations of junior level staff biologists.•Relocated desert tortoises found on or near construction right-of-ways.
