Have been a programmer, systems administrator, product manager, technical marketing manager, consultant, university educator, book author, magazine author and blogger.Worked on all sorts of architectures, from machines that could not store their own programs using relays, tubes and descrete transistors to RISC-V today.....from micro-computers to super-computers.Met Linus Torvalds in May of 1994 and worked with him to make the Linux kernel 64-bit and portable across hardware architectures.Foresaw several trends before they happened. Rise of Unix as an operating system, the use of CD-ROMs for distribution of software, the rise of Linux as a commercial system, need for a private, secure, peer-to-peer, open source cloud product.Have traveled to over 100 countries, most of them more than once, spoken at thousands of conferences, universities and enterprises about Unix, Linux and Free and Open Source Software.Developed many business plans for various companies, including two one billion dollar lines of business for Silicon Graphics and two one billion dollar lines of business for Digital Equipment Corporation. Consulted with IBM on their initial FOSS business plans and activities.Helped start Linux International in 1995, defended the Linux Trademark, enabled Linux Standard Base Project, Linux Mark Institute and Linux Professional Institute.Author of original "Linux For Dummies", wrote many articles for Linux Journal and Linux Pro Magazine.Board Chairperson of the Linux Professional Institute from July of 2015 to July of 2024. Now "Board Chair Emeritus"I continue to do worthy consulting projects.
