About Madeleine Z. R. Corum
I am a writer, leader, researcher, communications specialist, and bartender, but most of all I specialize in working with people. I have seven years of experience in communications, public relations, and graphic design. Most recently, I was the communications coordinator for Sunrise Fox Valley branch, a national environmental activist organization, and the public relations coordinator for SAASHA, a Lawrence University student government committee. In both positions, I spearheaded social media campaigns, designed posters and graphics, and wrote copy text. I specialized in figuring out how to communicate different ideas to students, either advertising events, programs, or education efforts. In the fall of 2022, I was promoted to the Co-Chair of SAASHA, where my expertise in communications expanded to steering the operations of my board and the facilitation of an active and collaborative relationship with the Lawrence administration to advocate for student needs and concerns. My proudest efforts as co-chair were discussion-based townhall events, in which SAASHA invites students to participate in a dialogue over issues directly affecting us, such as gossip culture about sexual assault stories on social media, and the way gender roles perpetuate rape culture and hinder restorative justice practices. I also have two years of research experience. In 2022 I was a research assistant to Dr. Jesús Smith for his upcoming book on sexual racism, fatphobia, and femmephobia in the gay men's community. This experience led me to design and execute my own independent research project in 2023, including applying for and receiving IRB approval for a qualitative study on race in the lesbian community where I conducted 10 in-depth interviews with lesbians in Austin, Texas. I'm applying this research towards an honors thesis, currently titled "A Tale of Two Austins: Negotiating Segregation in the Lesbian Community of Austin, Texas". This project has also been driven by my desire and efforts to understand the lived experiences of people, particularly those who are marginalized or minoritized by society. As a bartender, the skill I have exercised the most is how to make people feel safe and welcome in a space that I facilitate, which involves both being friendly and inviting, but also assertive and stern when necessary to stop problematic behavior that might occur. In my career and my life, I am constantly exercising this balance, and striving to always understand people better to cultivate a safer and happier environment for all.
