News Reporter
I led coverage of local government in the Fox Cities between eight municipalities and one county government. My coverage ranges from changes to government structure, economic development efforts in the community, trends in local government operations, budgets, and residents advocating for a stronger community. Part of my coverage has been state and nationwide as a contributor to the USA TODAY 2016 Elections Team. With a highly-watched Senate race, an "also-ran" governor, and an increasingly battleground state, my coverage drives conversations about the impact Wisconsin will have in elections nationally. I've also taken the lead reporting on the potential for a new ThedaCare regional hospital, which could shutter the doors of two long-standing hospitals in the Fox Valley community. I've explored the story in a multitude of angles from the initial news of the decision, the tax impact on communities, how ThedaCare has done similar mergers, whether the decision is in line with trends nationwide, and more. Because of this coverage, I've broadened my reporting skills in business, non-profit and health care beats.
Reporting Intern
I spent a year as a full-time reporting intern (part-time student) investigating Wisconsin's cranberry industry, GPS monitoring of sex offenders, and the efforts of the state's jobs agency. These were a combination of solo projects and joint projects. This work was done using the state's open records law, computer-assisted reporting and data analysis. My coverage of the state's economic development agency, the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation, was awarded a Gold Award from the Milwaukee Press Club in 2016 for best business series. I also helped create data visualizations using Tableau and Google Fusion Tables for interactive graphs and maps.
Writer
I researched and wrote monthly or bimonthly articles on topics of my choosing related to local politics and initiatives, catering specifically to a Midwestern audience. Topics have included a proposed CAFO in Wood County, Wis., immigration reform, and Common Core, among others.
State Editor
Assigning stories from state beat to reporters, editing beat articles, and reporting from the State Capitol building, including but not limited to legislative committee meetings, public hearings, Assembly and Senate sessions, state politics, and UW System news.
