As a part of the Finlay lab and under the supervision of Dr. Antonio Serapio Palacios I worked on the characterization of bacterial type 6 secretion systems & their role in the colonization of the gut microbiome. We utilized mouse models as well as in vitro models; both aerobic and anaerobic. We found evidence to support the presence of a control system for the type 6 secretion in Citrobacter rodentium by RT-qPCR. I also became proficient at a variety of technical skills such as RNA extraction, anaerobic bacterial culturing, rodent handling and necroscopy.

As part of the Nitz lab and under the supervision of Dr. Lisa Willis I worked on a glycobiology research project. I exploited genetic engineering premises to edit plasmid constructs to optimize detection of poly sialic acid for the goal of cancer detection by mass cytometry. I became proficient at various techniques including cloning, assays and protein expression.
