I covered the social welfare beat for a collaboration of three Kansas and one Missouri-based NPR member stations. Our work was picked up by commercial radio stations and local newspapers across the state. I covered the state's fully privatized foster care system both through breaking and quick-hit stories and through step-back pieces that grounded current issues in the larger structure and history of Kansas' child welfare policies. I did the same for issues of housing, food insecurity, mental health and state assistance policies. I tracked down dozens of ours of archival tape, and conducted contemporary issues for the award-winning "My Fellow Kansans" podcast episode on the Summer of Mercy. I also covered an intense gubernatorial election as one of three panelists on a weekly politics roundtable.

Miami/Fort Lauderdale Area

As an intern at WLRN, I pitched, reported, edited and produced radio stories for South Florida's NPR member station and wrote accompanying web stories. A frequently mobile reporter, I would also live-tweet events and breaking news and provide context for ongoing stories through the station's Instagram and Facebook accounts. I also pitched news updates and stories to NPR and the Miami Herald, a partner of WLRN's.During my tenure, I covered the Fort Lauderdale airport shooting, the response to the end of the U.S.'s Cuban immigration "Wet Foot, Dry Foot" policy, a bomb threat at Miami's Israeli consulate and other breaking news stories. A feature I produced for WLRN on limits to Secret Service spending on protectees' private residences was picked up by the Herald and by NPR's Weekend Edition.

Greater Chicago Area

-Investigated a potential wrongful conviction case in Michigan with eight other undergraduate journalism students-Conducted case research using public records such as court documents and police reports, reviewing medical records-Reported in the field and conducted extensive interviews with the accused, attorneys, family, witnesses, jurors and experts around the country-Was the primary liaison for phone calls with the woman whose conviction we were investigating-Proposed and did foundational research for one of our two web stories on the investigation, which focused on body language and demeanor

I coordinated a staff of 18 reporters to comprehensively cover events, issues and people on Northwestern University's campuses. I collaborate with newly-launched video and audio desks to incorporate multimedia storytelling into our coverage, and, as a member of our edit board, help make decisions about the paper's coverage and its future. I jumped on breaking news stories and filled in coverage gaps when other reporters weren't available to ensure that if it was news, and it had to do with Northwestern's campus, it could be found in our pages.
