Honours Research Project Fieldwork Placement
My original honours research project aimed to investigate the relationship between cognition (as measured by the Montreal Cognitive Assessment [MoCA]) and functional performance of instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) (as measured by the Texas Functional Living Scale [TFLS]) for older adults in a sub-acute setting. This involved the completion of a literature review, design of a quantitative research study, and a comprehensive ethics application. This involved the completion of a literature review, design of a quantitative research study, and a comprehensive ethics application. Unfortunately, the project was put on hold due to COVID-19. From this experience I was able to develop research knowledge and skills, which have assisted me in the completion of an additional project exploring occupational therapy student’s professionalism, resilience and reflective thinking – please refer to projects for further information on this study. As a part of my original project, I was able to complete a fieldwork component at a sub-acute Geriatric Evaluation and Management (GEM) service 1-2 days per week over an 11-week period. Placement at The Mornington Centre mainly involved working with patients with complex or multiple health conditions to assess their cognition. Cognitive assessments/screens utilised included the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Rowland Universal Dementia Assessment Scale (RUDAS). Additionally, I had the opportunity to assist with home visits, breakfast groups and diversional therapy. Show less
