As a student worker, I receive and document incoming lab samples using VetView software, order diagnostic tests, answering phones in a professional manner, answer client questions, and facilitate communication between the pathologists and the public.I have become proficient in creating memorial objects such as paw and nose prints for owners of deceased pets, as well as professionally and compassionately communicating with these clients during sensitive situations.I organize samples and determine which of four interior and numerous exterior laboratories they must be directed to for testing. I interpret client desires from written, in-person, and over-the-phone communication and retrieve necessary information from a large database in a timely manner.

As an intern, I assisted in restraint, routine treatment, diagnostic imaging, diagnostic microscopy, and rehabilitation of exotic animals including several species of sea turtles, turtles, alligators, crocodiles, birds, penguins, elasmobranchs, and a sloth. I also conducted a research project on the olfactory enrichment of the aquarium's Two-Toed Sloth in an effort to further enrich these under-studied animals.I aided in identification and processing of stranded and deceased critically endangered Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles, as well as the rehabilitation of cold-stunned turtles in a collaborative effort with the New England Aquarium.As an intern that also spent time with the Animal Ambassador department, I interacted with the public as a liaison between animals and interested individuals. I observed keepers facilitate interactions between people of all ages and penguins, sloths, armadillos, birds, and alligators. I helped train and desensitize these animals as well as feed and create enrichment for them.

During the summer at Shoals Animal Hospital, I cared for overnight and boarded companion animals. I individually monitored the health of animals on the weekends and reported necessary information to the veterinarians and veterinary technicians. I charted and organized the needs of each pet including medications, food, and considerations for allergies.I regularly shadowed surgical procedures and routine office visits. I administered injections, topical medications, oral medications, and took vital signs. I assisted in basic restraint and monitoring of anesthetized patients. I analyzed radiographs and learned the basics of operating and upkeeping a non-digital X-Ray machine.I learned about the ins and outs of veterinary medicine in regards to community medicine and what it takes to run a small animal practice. I participated in continuing education events for both veterinarians and veterinary technicians. I communicated with clients on a daily basis.
