About Madelyn Payne

I have always been passionate about understanding how everything works down to its core. This boils down to understanding and experimenting with the materials we use to see how the structure affects properties. During my PhD, I have focused on the microstructural analysis of deformation mechanisms in multi-principal element alloys via transmission electron microscopy.

  • Kinalco
    Engineering Intern
    Kinalco Jun 2019 - Aug 2019
    Cambridge, Ma
Identified composition, transformation temperatures, and functional properties of shape-memory alloy ingots, wire, and ribbon.Investigated how melting conditions affected alloy composition and uniformity.
  • Mit School Of Engineering
    Senior Thesis
Mit School Of Engineering Sep 2018 - May 2019
    Cambridge, Ma
Senior thesis project on crystallographic compatibility in polycrystalline Cu-based shape-memory alloys. Characterized the compatibility of Cu-Al-Ni-Mn alloys according to the cofactor conditions and correlated these findings with results from superelastic mechanical cycling.Presented a new alloy design that is predicted to meet the cofactor conditions and provides a promising path forward for a functionally stable, low-cost, polycrystalline Cu-based SMA.
