I am one of five students hired from a competitive pool of Business Analytics & Information Systems (BAIS) majors to launch a new division at Tippie College of Business. Our primary goal is focused on bringing awareness to the BAIS program, especially for women, students of color, and students outside of Tippie College of Business. We have met with Tippie leaders to create initiatives such as social media engagement, recruiting events, and other campaigns to achieve our aforementioned goal.

I have worked in Tippie's Specialized Masters Program Office since my freshman year of college. I greet students, faculty, staff, and employers visiting to promote a positive office environment. Additionally, I organize and assist with projects for faculty members. Some of the office duties and projects include tasks like performing student data analysis, answering phone calls, and completing other assignments as needed.

As a peer mentor, I worked with first-year students directly admitted to Tippie College of Business to help ease their college transition. I worked with a teaching team to lead a seminar twice a week for 40+ students. We focused on presenting the opportunities and resources the University of Iowa has to offer and enhance their college experience. This work included both lecturing inside the classroom as well as holding office hours during non-class times.

In my year of working as a server at Tribute, I learned many transferrable skills that I believe are relevant in any work environment. My main goal as a server was to offer prompt service and anticipate guests’ needs while facilitating their restaurant experience. I also developed teamwork and interpersonal skills working with a group to ensure smooth operations. As I became more experienced I was able to train new hires on service expectations.

I was a research intern at Caño Palma Biological Station, a research station run by The Canadian Organization for Tropical Education and Rainforest Conservation. I was living at the station in Costa Rica for about 7 weeks with a small group of people from all around the world. Our main goal is to promote the conservation of various native species in our area of operation. While all interns worked on all conservation projects, my focus was on sea turtles. Throughout my time at the station, I learned how to identify different types of sea turtles based on their appearance or their tracks. A typical sea turtle survey would occur from 11 pm to 3 am. We would walk six miles on the beach searching for sea turtles to collect data on. When we encountered a sea turtle, we would take body measurements, analyze their condition, and record data on its nest.
