My job is to keep the animals at PetSmart well-fed, cleaned, happy and to medicate any sick animals. It is my responsibility and honor to learn and care for every species present in the store and to help pet parents and prospective pet parents learn about the animals in their lives. My daily job includes cleaning enclosures, feeding animals, as well as educating customers in the needs of their current or future pets. I also assist in the check-out process from time to time. I love my job here as I get to be an integral part of the way that people care for their pets and the animals around them. I've never had a job that allowed me to work so closely with the public and to plant seeds of admiration for the species around them as this one.

Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina Area

As a Naturalist Center intern I educate the public about museum specimens, native wildlife species, and ecological principles. I also assist the Curator and Director of the Naturalist Center with a variety of projects from digitizing the herbarium to repairing old and creating new specimens in the Center. The use of technology, a professional attitude, and a broad knowledge of ecological principles are skills I use frequently here.

This was a six-week internship that was extremely intensive. As an animal care intern, I was required to memorize the diets of each animal in order to help the team prepare meals every morning. I helped to prepare meat and while chickens for the large wild cats, rats and mice for the small wild cats, and omnivorous diets for the omnivores at the facility. I also helped with the upkeep of the animal enclosures and the animals health.

While volunteering here for two summer, I earned around 260 hours of wildlife experience. I helped to prepare diets, administer medications, bind broken limbs, assist in radiography, keep records of patients, weigh/measure patients, complete intake/release exams, and even earner the privilege to release a few animals on my own. This experience gave me experience in handling small mammals, reptiles, and avian species as well as some raptor experience.
