My family is one that seems to relish lively debate over the news of the day. Years from now, when I remember family dinners, I will think of my grandfather, holding up a newspaper and declaring a point about what he’d just read, only to have another relative—an uncle or an aunt—say, “No, no, no,” and just as passionately explain how my grandfather had gotten it all wrong. For many years, I was disengaged from those discussions. When they began, my mind tended to drift—to school, to friends, to weekend plans. Until recently, I did not feel a connection to the issues that were, almost literally, on the table. My new passion for social issues and politics has changed how I view the world and live my life. As a fourth-year college student, I plan on engaging in the community through different internships and experiences this coming summer.
