Profile bio

About Madison Malie, Otd, Otr/L

When I first learned of the profession of occupational therapy, I became enamored with its emphasis on holistic, client-centered care and its roots in art and science. My personality is a harmonious balance between creativity and logic, which is why I gravitated towards wanting a career in healthcare but also craved a profession that aligned with my more artistic side. The academic rigor of the UF OTD program allowed me to develop my discipline-specific knowledge and competencies, professional identity, and effective communication skills while prioritizing a client-centered, evidence-based, and occupational lens.I was prepared and proficient in translating knowledge from didactic content to the clinical environment, where I honed in on my clinical skills and therapeutic use of self. My Level IIA Fieldwork experience at UF Health Heart & Vascular Hospital strengthened my ability to evaluate, plan, executive, and document treatment plans based on the client’s medical complexity and stability within an interdisciplinary team approach. I worked with clients in the Cardiac and Pulmonary ICU, where I prioritized patient safety as I continuously assessed patient status and medical stability to modify my treatment plan. During my Level IIB Fieldwork experience at Brooks Rehabilitation Hospital, I worked with TBI and SCI clients of varying levels of medical complexity which reinforced my proficiency in independently conducting evaluations, assessments, and interpreting results to formulate individualized treatment plans to target specific patient deficits and grade interventions. I fostered a collaborative and communicative clinical environment, where I participated in weekly “team huddles” to promote interdisciplinary care. During both fieldwork experiences, I provided instruction, training, and patient education for patients and caregivers to empower and prepare them for home or the next step in the continuum of care. I appreciate the opportunities I’ve had to meet and learn from a diverse group of patients, caregivers, and clinicians. For my Capstone, I am excited to be providing patient education individualized to the vascular population in the areas of health and self-management to improve patients’ confidence and knowledge.I am confident in my collaborative nature, clinical competencies, strong problem-solving skills, and my emotionally-intelligent approach to patient care. As I initiate my journey as a clinician-scholar, I am excited to see what the future holds and enthusiastic to begin a career as an occupational therapist.
