Profile bio

About Madison Patrick

I am a first-generation transfer student at Santa Clara University studying the fields of Sociology and Public Health with a concentration in community and social justice studies and a degree emphasis in applied ethics. I am a member of the International Sociology Honors Society, Alpha Kappa Delta and an executive lead for my university's "Partners in Health Engage" chapter. My academic and professional pursuits are centered around Human services, with a focus on addressing domestic violence, anti-human trafficking intervention strategies, and non-profit survivor support. My upcoming research as a Hackworth Fellow for the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics focuses on the overmedicalization of childbirth and the extenuating impact on low-income communities in light of national healthcare debt and provider shortages. With this knowledge, I am seeking to develop innovative strategies aimed at fortifying the collaboration between medical professionals and social services to expand protections for vulnerable populations. I have also committed to strengthening my expertise by receiving formal training on domestic violence survivor support and suicide prevention, alongside undertaking an intensive Emergency Medical Technician program, allowing me to obtain the skills as a pre-hospital life support provider. Furthermore, I hold a federal internship position with the Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families, aligning my passion for advocacy with a concrete role in anti-trafficking education and governmental logistics. In my specific academic training, I have gained experience developing both policy memorandums and literature reviews, and am thoroughly equipped to apply qualitative methods, quantitative methods, statistics, and research ethics.

As a Hackworth Fellow, I am seeking to address the healthcare ethics matter of the over-medicalization of childbirth, addressing the implications of Western intervention strategies on maternal and fetal health, while simultaneously acknowledging the excessive financial burden levied onto new parents that disproportionately affects marginalized communities and contributes to the severity of our country’s healthcare debt. This project will allow me to grapple with these ethical concerns within the context of the nationwide shortage of healthcare providers and the individualistic culture of care in the U.S. that exacerbates malpractice concerns and prioritizes short-term solutions above long-term patient satisfaction. I am honored to engage with this opportunity and to ensure that my peers are educated on the realities of autonomy and informed consent in healthcare. Show less
