This project will allow me to grapple with these ethical concerns within… Show more As a Hackworth Fellow, I am seeking to address the healthcare ethics matter of the over-medicalization of childbirth, addressing the implications of Western intervention strategies on maternal and fetal health, while simultaneously acknowledging the excessive financial burden levied onto new parents that disproportionately affects marginalized communities and contributes to the severity of our country’s healthcare debt. This project will allow me to grapple with these ethical concerns within the context of the nationwide shortage of healthcare providers and the individualistic culture of care in the U.S. that exacerbates malpractice concerns and prioritizes short-term solutions above long-term patient satisfaction. Region 9 fulfills ACF’s mission of improving the health and well--being of families, children, individuals, and community service providers by providing federal leadership,partnership, and resources for the compassionate and effective delivery of human services. Region 9’sprogram offices fund awards to state, territory, and local governments, non-profit groups, faith andcommunity-based organizations, American Indian tribes, and Native American and indigenouscommunities. These programs include child care, child support, child welfare, Temporary Assistancefor Needy Families (TANF), Head Start, Runaway and Homeless Youth Programs, and refugeeresettlement programs. The Office of the Regional Administrator (ORA) provides leadership on cross-cutting, results-based strategic initiatives, and public-private partnerships to support ACF priorities and state and local reform efforts. As part of this work, ORA staff convenes government and community leaders to facilitate the development and modification of programs and activities related to economic mobility and self-sufficiency goals. As an intern, my contribution is largely centered around research, partnership building, and assistance with planning two regional convenings and a webinar series related to the current Region 9 priorities of anti-human trafficking efforts and the Rural Communities Engagement Initiative.
