I am a clinician-educator who completed a two-year Geriatrics fellowship at Johns Hopkins University, as well as a one-year Palliative Care fellowship at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. For two years, I worked at the Gilchrist Hospice inpatient unit and served as an assistant professor at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. My time at the University taught me the value of the healing arts and the mind-body connection. I sincerely enjoy working with interdisciplinary teams and value my colleagues' skills and expertise.From an academic and clinical perspective, my passion is inpatient Palliative Care and Hospice. I enjoy patient care, and I have come to realize that each of my patients has a life story of strength, kindness, tenacity, determination, and devotion that invokes a sense of admiration, and has made me a better human being.I enjoy teaching, humanities, and healing arts. Additionally, I have experience in curriculum development, house call programs, long-term care, post-acute, and inpatient and home Hospice. My research centers on merging Geriatric and Palliative Care principles and skills in treating patients with serious illnesses in multiple settings.I am passionate about helping patients and their families improve their quality of life, particularly those with the most complex care needs. While working in Palliative Care, I have strived to integrate the physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of pain and symptom management.I was born in Costa Rica, and Spanish is my native language. In 2018, my youngest daughter, Abigail, was diagnosed with Autism. From that moment, I began studying Integrative Medicine, Nutrition, and Plant Medicine.
