My work over the last two decades relies on delivering a strong message to the public by presenting design and architecture as a key part of American history. I present lectures, conduct public outreach, write grants, develop preservation plans, and create new opportunities for old buildings and landscapes. Recently completed the National Historic Landmark nomination for the 1937-1959 J. Andre Smith-designed Research Studio/Art Center in Maitland, Florida (for the City of Maitland), an extraordinary example of the Mayan Revival during the Art Deco period. Also a specialist in genealogy and tracing family lineages with explorations into original documents from each era. I have also worked as an historian with other private practices, including Peter Meijer Architect, P.C., Portland, Oregon (http://pmapdx.com/). Peter Meijer Architect, P.C. was commissioned to complete the St. Louis City Modernism Survey & Historic Context. This project included a targeted survey of buildings constructed in the City of St. Louis between 1945 and 1975, with related contexts focusing on modern architecture overall during this period, and a study of the architects who practiced in the city and studied or worked with Washington University in St. Louis. Consulting project headed by Peter Meijer Architect, P.C. for the St. Louis Planning and Urban Design Agency, financed in part by a grant from the Historic Preservation Program, Division of State Parks, Missouri Department of Natural Resources and the National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior. Developed a series of new courses for graduate students focusing on the preservation and study of 20th-century modernist buildings. Provided practical training opportunities to the students through participation in grant projects and local preservation efforts. Project director and grant writer of “Florida’s Mid-Century Modern Resources, 1945-1975” survey through the University of Florida with a $50,000 grant from the State Division of Historic Resources. Noted as the No. 1 ranked grant out of a field of more than 70 applications. Also teaching "Conservation of Modern Architecture," at the College of Design, Construction and Planning, in the Historic Preservation Program. The course focuses on issues impacting the preservation and sustainability of sites associated with the Modern Movement (ca. 1900-1975), through readings, class discussions, and research projects. The house was successfully moved in December 2013. Advocates and organizations raised more than $600,000 in six months to save the house. (GS-0170-09)o Surveyed and documented sites for the List of Classified Structures (LCS), an inventory database maintained by the National Park Service (NPS), containing a listing and description of all historic properties within NPS administered lands, evaluated by National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) criteria. During employment, I located previously undocumented structures on NPS property in the National Capital Area. Sites found were researched and investigated through oral interviews with park staff and local residents, local and national archives, deeds, and field examination. o Collected and evaluated and analyzed written and graphic information pertaining to the resources discovered. Each structure was determined eligible or ineligible for the NRHP upon concurrence by the governing state historic preservation office (SHPO).o Completed documented on over 1100 structures, each entered into the LCS database and accompanied by a hardcopy reference set with photographs.o Project sites included Antietam National Battlefield (1862), Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park (ca. 1850), Prince William Forest Park community cemeteries and house sites (nineteenth and twentieth centuries), and the Western Maryland Railway (ca. 1910). o Significant sites discovered during field research: Chapman Mill and Plantation, ca. 1802, Prince William Forest Park, Virginia; oldest cemetery in Montgomery County, Maryland, ca. 1755, Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park. -
