About Mads Kristensen
I am a sociologist who specializes in embodiment, identity and culture, and interestingly enough also tattoos (which to be transparent, I have quite the passion for). I am a very passionate individual, both in and outside of my work, and as much as I like to slow down at times and enjoy life, I pride myself on working hard and completing tasks, and projects. I am especially passionate about are diversity and inclusivity. I personally believe that when we embrace these principles, especially diversity, we make the world a better place and it breeds more variety and in turn increases innovation, as you open up to a greater variety of voices, experiences, cultures and identities. This holds true for any field, whether you are creating a magazine or podcast, teaching students at a university, or you have a company that wants to sell a useful product to clients. I am also a passionate and gifted at dissemination of knowledge, and I pride myself on being able to translate academic theory into a language that lay people can also understand, so that we (once again), make sure knowledge and data is inclusive, accessible, and useful to everyone. This is present both when I have to write articles, vignettes or editorials. But indeed, it is especially noticeable when I convey knowledge orally, either through presentations and lectures, or indeed in the way I do it on my podcast (if you are curious about tattooed people and culture you should check it out, there are links to it on my feed). This also brings me to another talent I have, I am well versed in qualitative methods, and according to my former PhD supervisors (I did not complete the PhD, as many do not, but they said this to me at a meeting before I left), I am a naturally gifted interviewer with a flair for making people I interview comfortable, noticing key details in the information they share, and gathering interesting in depth data, through well thought out questions. As a cultural sociologist, I also have a keen ability to understand and empathize with people from cultures that may be different from my own, at least in some aspects (many cultural differences may seem greater at first than they truly are, once you get to know people) and I function extremely well in a diverse team, with people from a diverse array of various backgrounds, both academically, socially and culturally.Lastly, I am also not afraid to get my hands dirty, and work a storefront or in any capacity that involves person to person contact. In fact, I thrive in interactions with other people.

While undertaking my own PhD studies and research I also taught the introductory courses Sociology 1A and Sociology 1B. The courses included introducing the students to a broad variety of different topics that sociology can tackle, which also included topics such as sexuality or race, which required a deft hand at how to best deliver and teach the seminars regarding sensitive topics, so all students would be able to get the most out of the teaching. The courses also involved introducing the students to other fields related to sociology, such as criminology and anthropology. The teaching involved creating my own lesson plan based on an outline of the "intended learning outcomes" provided by the lecturers, which I then based my teaching plan on. I would then come up with my own tasks for the students in class, or make adjustments to the tasks provided by the lecturers, so they would fit my teaching style and work well to impart the intended knowledge to the students. I received a lot of positive feedback from my students on both courses and they were always engaged with the teaching, thanks to my personal and down-to-earth teaching style, where I involve examples from both their lives and my own experiences as well. I also received a lot of positive feedback from the course convener Andrew Smith, and the course administrator Olive Bredin, both of whom said I was an invaluable part of the teaching team and brought keen and creative insights to the problems that needed solving.
