I'm a Los Angeles based NYRican Executive Director of a longtime non-profit that works with day laborers and household workers on organizing, educational, and policy strategies in order for them to change the world they live in, especially in terms of labor and immigration rights but also as whole individuals. Prior to this I was development director and program manager of Mobile Voices at IDEPSCA, a digital literacy program using cell phones. Before that I was a freelance journalist, media maker, and media consultant who focuses on Latino political issues, especially immigration and motherhood. Over the past 10 years I have written for numerous publications including The Progressive, The American Prospect, The Nation, Colorlines, El Diario La Prensa, Latina, Cosmo for Latinas, Fairness & Accuracy in Reporting's Extra!, Make/shift, Fusion, and Poltics365.com I was the founding editor of one of the first Latino blogs, VivirLatino.com. For VivirLatino I have covered everything from the 2008 presidential campaign to the Latin Grammy Awards. In 2006, I was named Latina magazine's Blogger of the Month. I have been featured on NPR, Pacifica, PBS and the BBC discussing immigration and Latino politicsI cut my organizing teeth in NYC in the late 1990s.
