The residency in Primary Eye Care Optometry provides a broad based clinical experience in all aspects of Primary Care. Residents expand their clinical knowledge by rotating through the SUNY Primary Care Clinic in order to experience a wide variety of patient types. This includes patients requiring contact lens care, diagnosis of binocular anomalies, diagnosis, management and treatment of glaucoma, retinal disease, and emergency eyecare needs. In addition, residents rotate through the SUNY Glaucoma Institute, and experience urban clinical patient care at Woodhull Hospital in Brooklyn. The resident gains experience in refractive surgery comanagement by rotating through TLC laser center in Manhattan. In a teaching capacity, the resident instructs second-year interns in the Methods laboratory and supervises third-year interns in the Primary Care clinic. Additionally, the resident can pursue specific clinical interests in vision therapy, low vision, pediatric and infant eyecare, head trauma, retina, neuro-optometry, cornea and specialty contact lens clinics.

• Provided care at a full-scope federally qualified health care center which provides comprehensive multi-specialty health care services in the Brooklyn community• Conducted comprehensive eye examinations with an emphasis on the diagnosis of binocular vision disorders, perceptual dysfunctions, amblyopia and strabismus on a diverse largely pediatric population including children with special needs• Performed one-on-one and group vision therapy with children and adults with a variety of binocular and perceptual disorders• Expanded competence in the treatment of children, especially those with learning-related issues and special needs• Worked with children on the autistic spectrum and adults who have suffered stroke and head injuries• Developed essential skills on how to incorporate current literature and scientific study and begin to understand the skills involved in building an evidenced based specialty-oriented practice

• Performed comprehensive eye care with an emphasis on diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma, retinal diseases, neuro-ophthalmology, cataracts, and dry eye• Interpreted various diagnostic instruments including ocular coherence tomography (Cirrus, Topcon, iVue), Humphrey/Octopus/Goldmann perimetry, Heidelberg Retinal Tomograph (HRT), and retinal photography with cameras designed for both dilated and non-dilated patients• Conducted comprehensive eye examinations with an emphasis on the diagnosis of binocular vision disorders, perceptual dysfunctions, amblyopia, and strabismus on a diverse pediatric population including children with special needs• Performed one on one vision therapy to a variety of patients with varied and complex diagnoses• Provided thorough examination of low vision patients to help identify their needs and dispensed low vision devices to improve their daily life• Rotated through the UEC contact lens clinic gaining experience prescribing all forms of soft contact lenses and fitting keratoconics with RGP lenses, Synergeyes lenses and Piggy Back Systems to maximize vision and comfort• Provided comprehensive eye care to underserved populations in NYC at the Bowery Mission• Assisted in the management of the pre and post-operative care of LASIK, PRK and Intacts patients at the New York Vision Group
