At the time of my promotion, I did some quick math about my first 15 months at Duarte.~wrote 25+ presentations (from seeds of ideas to full scripts) including keynotes, sales decks, investor pitches, and full day trainings.~gave recommendations/thought partnership on another ~25 presentations. ~conducted 100+ coaching sessions with executives, emerging leaders, keynote speakers, and sales reps.~co-facilitated or facilitated a dozen trainings.~worked on cool client projects like creating the theme for a company's annual event and developing strategic internal messaging for team member alignment.~all while having a killer good time helping grow our speaker coaching practice.I looked at the list and thought "Man. I didn't expect to join the Duarte familia. When I was deciding how I wanted to grow in my career, I figured the next step was to join the exec or internal comms team at a company. But after the Duarte recruiter reached out, and I talked with the leaders of the Content and Strategy team, I fell in love. I was hired as a Content Developer (but if I met you on an airplane and you asked me about my job, I'd tell you I'm a Speechwriter). Once I joined Duarte, I learned they were expanding their speaker coaching business, and I said "I can do that, too!" That's how I spend my days. Writing keynotes, sales decks, investor pitches, etc...and coaching leaders how to deliver those messages with impact.

Following my experience with business students in the university's basic communication course, I was recommended for a teaching position in the McCombs School of Business at UT. I had quite the learning curve when I started teaching Business Communication (BA 324), mainly due to its emphasis on business writing (and my background was in business presentations and relationship-building). I increased my own knowledge in business writing by consulting professionals and reading new publications. My evaluations will tell you that I bring high energy and practical knowledge to this course (and that I drink a lot of coffee).

I took my teaching skills outside of the classroom in 2012 when I began independent communication consulting and coaching. My initial sessions focused on presentations/public speaking and have since increased to methodological trainings for academics and practitioners, conflict management and meeting effectiveness for city officials, and job search materials for various professionals. My initial conversation with Quantified Communications went something like this: QC: We’ve used communication science to create a platform to measure and track communication. Then, we use the data to support executives and leaders. ME: Wait, what? I’ve spent the last 10+ years teaching college students, coaching business professionals, AND researching the role of language in communication, but you’ve found a way to put it all together? I want in. I spent two and a half years at QC where I used the data from their proprietary platform to help Fortune 100 executives, high-profile leaders, TED/x Speakers, top business schools, start-up founders, and learning and development programs with their key messages.I also became heavily involved in the business development and client retention process as I held scoping calls with prospective clients, conducted virtual and in-person product demos, drafted proposals, negotiated contracts, and managed accounts.

Everything about the programs at Strauss will give you the warm and fuzzies. I began conducting program evaluations for the very important and engaging events put on by the New Politics Forum in 2010, and my role at the institute expanded in 2015 to include more research projects.

There is something really special about teaching in the community-college classroom. The diversity in the student body makes for an enlightening experience. I've taught interpersonal, public speaking, and hybrid courses at ACC, and my evaluations repeatedly rank higher than the department and college averages.
