About Jochen Maes

I am consultant with Ecorys and have a track record of over a decade. I worked four years as an academic researcher at the policy research centre on commodity flows, embedded at the University of Antwerp. There I worked on research related to mobility policies, urban freight- and rail freight supply chains. I published papers and presented at numerous conferences (e.g. on low emission zones, urban freight transport by bicycle, urban rail freight transport and urban waterway transport). I authored a book on rail transport, 'Spoorvervoer Toegepast' helping students to find their way in rail freight transport. I joined Ecorys in '13, where I am a policy-oriented consultant in the transport field.I am since 2020 Professor transport economics at UGent. From 2023 onwards I will be organising the Antwerp rail school 2025. A perfect combination with my academic engagement at UGent and my portfolio at Ecorys. ---At Ecorys, I am conducting studies on European, national and regional mobility policies, transport in general (urban rail, supply chains, infrastructure and pilotage), freight transport (rail, inland waterways and road), logistics and ITS. I have experience in conducting Cost Benefit Analysis (CBA) and Impact Assessments (IA). My specific expertise lies in forecasting and benchmarking studies in the maritime, inland shipping and (hinterland) transport fields. I also obtained a PhD in transport economics from the University of Antwerp, titled 'The potential of cargo bicycle transport as a sustainable solution for urban logistics' which you can find here https://doc.anet.be/docman/docman.phtml?file=.irua.dffe74.12869.pdf In 2015, I co-authored a handbook on rail transport. This book was actualised for the third print in september 2021. You can order it here: https://www.larcier-intersentia.com/nl/spoorvervoer-derde-editie-9789400013568.html. In 2023 the book was also published in French: https://www.larcier-intersentia.com/fr/transport-ferroviaire-marchandises-9782802772286.html

• University Of Antwerp
Organiser Of Antwerp Rail School I Next Edition 2025
University Of Antwerp Sep 2023 - Present
    Antwerp, Flemish Region, Belgium
Lloyd’s Register Rail (now known as Ricardo rail) and TRANSPORTNET united their efforts in 2010 to establish a comprehensive rail school program that addresses critical and current subjects within the rail transportation sector, encompassing markets, business, and research. As one of the co-founders, I entrusted the rail school to capable hands of colleagues at the University of Antwerp, when joining Ecorys.Over a decade has passed, and now I am rejoining the organising committee. Throughout these years, the Antwerp rail school has consistently served as a platform for disseminating rail knowledge. The approach has been finetuned, leading to the inclusion of partners such as Infrabel, NMBS, Siemens, and Lineas in the organising board, alongside the founders Ricardo rail and the Department of TPR of the University of Antwerp. A notable change has been the integration of Master students into the curriculum, motivating them to pursue careers within the rail industry. Also site visits were added. I am excited to lead the organisation of the upcoming edition, scheduled for the first half of 2025. A perfect combination with my academic engagement at UGent and my current portfolio at Ecorys. Should you be interested in collaborating as a partner, sponsor, or speaker, please do not hesitate to reach out. Your involvement is welcomed and appreciated.Website:https://www.uantwerpen.be/en/projects/transportnet/courses/rail-school/Baseline:The current key aspects of the rail industry are covered during the Antwerp Rail School. This is a great opportunity for seasoned professionals in the business to gain more in-depth knowledge, as well as for academics and PhD students who would like to gain advanced insight how rail businesses work and what scientific methods can be applied and derived. During and in between the sessions, there will be many opportunities for networking. The course also values 3 ECTS credits for doctoral programs and Master students.
