In 2013 I've started a new research project now focused on understanding the impact of chronic stress on the splicing machinery in the brain and whether it underlies the molecular mechanisms taking place in neurodegenerative disorders.In 2012 I’ve started a new challenge working in a translational-driven research project in thefield of neurodegeneration in Machado-Joseph Disease, where I’ve established a fast throughputassay for automated analysis of C.elegans locomotion/activity.

As a Postdoctoral researcher at IBMC I've developed a project in molecular immunology to dissect the molecular mechanisms involved in activation-induced alternative splicing of CD6 ligand-binding domain in T cells, under the supervision of Prof. Alexandre do Carmo. I’ve started by first steps in science studying basic processes of regulating mRNA isoformsexpression by means of the macromolecular spliceosomal machinery. By that time alternativesplicing and its powerful regulatory mechanisms operating in the cell fascinated me. While it isincreasingly clear that mutations leading to genetic disease can affect proper pre-mRNAsplicing, the molecular basis for these effects is only starting to be investigated. I took theapproach of asking to what extent some well characterized mutations leading to a variety ofhuman diseases have an effect on 3’ splice site recognition by U2AF, an essential splicing factorstudied by the laboratory of Prof. Juan Valcárcel, my PhD thesis supervisor.
