The Earth Paintings are raw-edged artist canvas of textured abstraction in western landscape colors. I have a portable studio, for sustained travel and camping where climate, geology and topography permit long hours of sweaty activity in the open air and access to useable soils. I hammer, crush, sift and prepare the different colors in separate bowls. I spread the unprimed unstretched canvas out on the ground. I sit, kneel, crouch, stand, bend over as I apply the different earths to the canvas with my hands and paint brushes. While painting I loose myself into total focus on the task--feeling the colors, how they wish to be spread/ They provoke reflection, and invite you to experience a response to place.
