About Maggie Breathnach

As an IFTA-winning Director/Producer with over two decades industry experience I have created content for broadcasters, both nationally and internationally including RTÉ, Sky Arts, TG4, BBC ALBA, and Oireachtas TV.Having started my career with Forefront Productions, I went on to co-found Red Shoe Productions in 2007, now based in the Déise Gaeltacht in West Waterford. At Red Shoe we worked with Ireland's national Irish/Gaelic language broadcaster, TG4 to create their flagship arts show “Imeall”, showcasing over 100 artists in short films. This further cemented my reputation nationally as a renowned Producer/Director within the arts.Following the success of “Imeall”, I have gone on to direct and produce a number of highly successful programmes including “Gradam Ceoil” - the traditional Irish music equivalent of the Grammys - which I transformed from a pre-recorded awards show to a 2-hour live extravaganza of Irish singing, music and dance; “Fleadh Cheoil” for RTÉ; “Between Worlds” - a feature documentary on the composer Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin for RTÉ; and most recently “Voices of Ireland” for Sky Arts which won the Best Specialist Factual award at the RTS Ireland Awards 2022.In 2016 I was elected to the Board of Screen Producers Ireland (SPI). I am an active member of the board and sit on both the Committee for Irish Language Programming, An Coiste Gaeilge and the Diversity, Equality and Inclusion Committee. My passion lies within culture and the arts. As a long-time advocate for the artistic community, my vision and ambition is to push the boundaries of the reach of arts programming. As well as promoting the use of the Irish language in the sector, I am keen to contribute to the preservation and archive of the Irish arts. Red Shoe Productions is a small female-owned and operated company with big ambitions for partnerships and co-productions in the future, championing and promoting Irish arts worldwide.

Dance film conceived and choreographed by Fearghus Ó Conchúir with director Dearbhla Walsh. Music by Iarla Ó Lionáird. A Dance on the Box Commission by RTÉ with the Arts Council of Ireland.Choreographer: Fearghus Ó ConchúirMusic Composer: Iarla Ó LionáirdDirector: Dearbhla WalshDOP: Kate McCullough The film places the muscular physicality of a solo male dancer within the socially and spiritually resonant architecture of a Catholic church. This bringing together of dance and location invites a timely reflection on the impact of the Church on the formation of the Irish body.As a counterpoint to this adult male dance, the film’s arc is shaped by the liturgical tidying up of a single altar boy at the end of mass. He quenches candles, removes cruets, folds cloth, replaces the altar bells. The film allows the dance to be read in relation to the boy’s actions. The third presence in the chapel is that of a woman in her sixties who sits in one of the pews. While the boy is not aware of the male dancer, the woman sees everything.
