I am the lead subject matter expert at Alexi, an artificial intelligence legal tech startup focused on the litigation market.I am integrally involved in all steps of product development from ideation and design to testing and bug fixes. As a member of inter-disciplinary product-oriented delivery teams, I help build and improve new and existing functionalities like AI-generated research memos, document Q&A and summarization agents, legal chatbots, etc.I also act as consultant to all company divisions as needed. I work closely with the artificial intelligence team to brainstorm hypotheses, collect data for experiments, and iterate on prompts; guide the product team with everything from high level priority planning to particular details of the user experience; strategize with the marketing and sales teams; and teach the engineering teams about the legal system.As Director, I manage, mentor, and delegate work to my team of research lawyers and legal subject matter experts in the U.S. and Canada.

As Head of U.S. Legal Research, my primary responsibility was reviewing and editing, for both substance and style, thousands of legal research memos (now known as "Pro Memos"), in all practice areas and jurisdictions within the United States, written by my team of research lawyers. I also continued to research and write many memos myself, as needed, and recruited, trained, and managed our team of U.S. research lawyers.After the launch of "Instant Memos", I also reviewed and provided feedback on legal research memos generated by artificial intelligence.In pursuit of said AI, I assisted our engineering teams with user experience design and the structuring and retrieval of American case law data.I also helped customers directly with support inquiries involving substantive law and interfaced with with representatives from law firms of all sizes for market research purposes.

I researched and wrote hundreds of Alexi Pro Memos in all areas of law from multiple jurisdictions within the United States and Canada utilizing Alexi’s internal AI tools and traditional legal research methods.

I advised small businesses and entrepreneurs with respect to licensing and regulatory compliance under the federal and provincial cannabis regulatory regimes and provided general corporate/commercial services, such as drafting distribution agreements, sale agreements, liability waivers, speaking engagement contracts, commercial offer to lease terms, non-solicitation agreements, etc. to clients in all industries.I conducted outsourced legal research and drafted memoranda of law and pleadings for civil lawyers.I also successfully defended a simplified procedure matter, obtaining an award of substantial indemnity costs at trial.

I edited "Proof of Fact" articles for WestLawNext Canada to ensure that the sample pleadings, discovery and testimony conformed with Canadian law and practice.

I litigated a broad range of disputes, including government liability, product liability, contract, insurance, employment, franchising, and real estate matters. This often involved researching and providing written and verbal opinions on liability exposure, insurance coverage issues, regulatory compliance, and franchise agreements.Key accomplishments include:• Defending a half million dollar breach of contract claim, with success, against a major GTA municipality to the Court of Appeal level (Chinese Publications for Canadian Libraries Ltd. v. Markham (City), 2018 ONCA 413);• Acting as outside litigation counsel for a multinational manufacturer of electronics and appliances, handling product liability actions commenced in all common law jurisdictions in Canada and supervising local counsel in Quebec;• Drafting a regional municipality's internal drone use policy to address compliance with Canadian regulations and privacy legislation; and• Obtaining a million dollar settlement for a franchisee of a well-known health food franchise.I also researched and updated the 2015 edition of the looseleaf textbook co-authored by the firm's managing partner, The Law of Municipal Liability in Canada (Markham, Ontario: LexisNexis Canada Inc., 1999).

I defended insurance companies in tort and accident benefits matters and appeared before the Superior Court, Small Claims Court, and tribunals on motions and settlement conferences.

I maintained sole carriage of Small Claims Court files on personal injury and property damage claims (plaintiff and defendant), and attended settlement conferences and negotiated settlements.

I conducted legal research and drafted memoranda of law on procedural and substantive issues related to ongoing legal proceedings in the areas of civil litigation and family law.

I consulted nonprofit organizations on Network for Good’s online fundraising and email marketing tools and acted as the first point of escalation for inquiries regarding certain NFG products. I also drafted, organized and managed response libraries for frequently asked questions and created customer training materials.
