Hi! I'm Maggie, when I was in school at California State University of San Bernardino (CSUSB), I was on track to becoming a special education teacher. Every class had a peer who was already in a classroom and I kept hearing how teachers were quite limited when it came to truly helping students for various reasons like, curriculum expectation or class size. I wanted to do more, reach more students. I began to ask professors about which roles in education really had the opportunity to change school cultures, identify needs of children and do more about it. I adopted philosophy of taking action to provide more for students outside of the classroom common core, why were so many school missing counselors on campus, where was the restorative actions when kids were getting in trouble? This passion quickly became a career path, so I naturally dropped all teaching courses and focused on foundations of human development, psychology, and educational justice. I have spent the last year growing in a graduate school program designed to bring balance to a system of education that customarily overlooks the students who need it most. With my own diverse background (being Mexican American, former English Language Learner (ELL) student, a woman) and diverse interests (book club organizer, poet hobbyist, amateur photographer, major foodie) I hope to achieve change in underserved populations through multicultural competency programs promoting educational justice.
