Mark Twain once said that he didn’t have time to write a short letter, so he wrote a long one instead. I think about this a lot: a good communicator is like a good storyteller. Even when you’re working with complex policies, you need to engage your audience and make the message easy to understand. As Chief Communications Officer and Policy Advisor at the Ohio State Bar Association, I strive to make the law more relatable by sharing information that's complete but also concise. To do that, I guide my team toward clear communication. We let member attorneys know how legislative developments may affect them and advocate for member views with the state legislature. We also want consumers to be aware of their legal options and understand the ways attorneys can help. There are so many channels where people get their information, so it's vital for our message to be strategically targeted and composed. Not only are we competing for the attention of different audiences, we're distilling information from a highly specialized field whose practitioners are not exactly known for being brief. To do this well requires:• crafting communications that encourage reading and viewing• identifying how our teams can be effective resources• assisting members in constructing their own focused and succinct marketing strategiesI am a writer and I’m naturally curious, so I love to dig into a topic to pick up as much as I can. I take great satisfaction in translating the complex into something useful and commonsense. It's probably not a surprise that history is one of my interests outside of work. Whenever I travel I seek out historical sites and I love estate sales. You never know how what you discover in the past may prove meaningful here and now.Specialties include: strategic communications | public relations | legislative relations
