The Rio Tinto aluminium smelter in Hafnarfjörður in Iceland began operations in 1969. Today, it produces 184,000 tonnes of some of the highest quality, lowest carbon footprint aluminium in the world, with 100% of the electricity generated from clean, renewable hydropower, supplied by the power company Landsvirkjun.

The Icelandic National Energy Authority is a government agency under the Ministry of Industries and Innovation. Its main responsibilities are to advise the Government of Iceland on energy issues and related topics, license and monitor the development and exploitation of energy and mineral resources, regulate the operation of the electrical transmission and distribution system and promote energy research.

The core product at Elkem Iceland is FeSi 75% of different grades. FeSi is one of the raw materials for the steel industry, either used in the refining of steel or as an alloying element. In addition to this it is used to a minor extent in the chemical industry.
