About Max Liu

Dr. Liu is a Senior Sustainability Power Engineer at Amazon Web Services, where his expertise converges at the nexus of power systems, control, optimization, machine learning, and data center energy modeling. His recent endeavors focus on data-driven solutions to enhance data center efficiency through data analytics and machine learning techniques. He spearheads initiatives such as developing load modeling strategies to augment power utilization in regions with power constraints, and pioneering the creation of AWS's Data Center Microgrid system in regions with unreliable grids. His previous research interests were in the investigation and development of secure control applications for cyber-physical power systems. Dr. Liu received the National Science Foundation East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes Fellowship in 2015 (PI), the Best Paper Award at the 2016 North American Power Symposium (NAPS), the Siebel Energy Scholar Award in 2017, and the Siebel Energy Institute Seed Grant in 2018. Besides engineering activities, Dr. Liu is a professional figure skating coach. He was an ensemble skater with several production companies performing around the world for over six years (2004-2010). He is also an avid traveler, having explored over 80 countries to date, indulging in the diverse cultures and landscapes the world has to offer.
