As the earliest installed wind farms are now reaching the end of their life, a new challenge emerges for the industry: decommissioning.In this thesis, we will through a literature study and two case studies show that although the decommissioning process itself is not particularly complex, immature legal frameworks and lack of experience leave the industry players with much uncertainty, both with regards to decommissioning method and how to handle the composite materials from the blades post-decommissioning in a sustainable manner. Decommissioning will – with a delay of 20-30 years – go through the exact same growth as installation did, and it is therefore of paramount importance that the industry identifies sustainable methods and practices, as a failure to do so will diminish the industry’s sustainability profile and put its position as a preferred energy solution at risk.
