Director And Founder
Responsible before the board for economy, staff and mission. This included leading the daily operation and working with strategy and vision; building organisational culture and grounding this new organisation within the larger context of Uppsala University by establishing trust and respect for this new interdisciplinary entity - the first student initiated, and largely student driven, institution in the history of this traditional classical University founded in 1477. This was a highly collaborative endeavour that could not have succeed without deep commitment from a multitude of actors. The goal was to stimulate studies and deeper understanding of challenges in the intersect between the possibilities and constraints that nature provides and the aspirations and development of society. This was done by encouraging and enable cross-faculty collaboration, developing novel interdisciplinary courses and seminars and facilitate communication between students from different disciplines, researchers and the society at large. The organisation grew to a staff of 14 and hundreds of students yearly."As Dean of the Faculty of Science and now as Vice-Chancellor of Uppsala University, he has seen Cemus develop from a student initiative to an established Centre. In his opinion the way Cemus is organised uniquely builds on the drive and initiative of the student body while at the same time fullfills all duties and responsibilities of a formal university institution. This makes the centre '…the epitome of how a university should function'." [Interview with Bo Sundqvist 2005, in Report from The National Agency for Higher Education, Sweden. (Rapport 2005:47 R; Perspektiv på hållbar utveckling Erfarenheter från högskola och näringsliv.)]
Systemanalytiker
Early member of "Environmental Strategies Research Group". The approach was "decision making oriented systems thinking". Our work rested on the recognition that there are complex and resistant problems in society that are not likely solved by optimisation of the existing structure and that there is a need to open up a decision space of possible futures not constrained by what is by current standards and current paradigm deemed realistic - hence one method of choice was to build studies around back casting. I contributed to a futures study on sustainable traffic and transportation and co-lead a study that presented a strategy for a low-waste/re-cycling society. A major task was taking the lead over the first comprehensive assessment of ”The Military Defence and the Environment” (Det militära försvaret och miljön, ISBN:91-972385-3-8), which involved collaboration between sex government agencies for one calendar year. I made my final report, and presentation, to the Supreme Commander.
