Senior Architectural Technologist

Melbourne, Australia

I was employed with this practice I worked on Castle Towers Shopping Centre that is based in Sydney, Australia. The estimated project cost of $1B consisted of:- Part demolition of the existing shopping centre- A proposed shopping centre extension- Planning and co-ordination of the retail precinct to be integrated with 5 towers on the site each c. 20 storeys high- Two external town square precincts to the proposed centre consisting of civic buildings, restaurants, retail, pavilions, landscaping and communal areas and relocation and refurbishment of two existing heritage listed buildingsMy role within project team was to report directly to the project architect and included design development with particular attention to the structural coordination on the project. This included upgrading of existing framing to accommodate proposed works, co-ordinating bulk earthworks, retention and demolition works and ultimately coordinating the proposed architectural design with the structural schematic layouts. Part of this also required me to attend the site office in Sydney to attend meetings with structural consultants to discuss design items that needed attention. While there I developed the Schematic Design and Town Planning documentation packages to submit them to the responsible parties. As a result I have gained gained a valuable understanding of complex construction methods as well as services and structural provisions for residential and commercial tower designDuties:• Revit model management and information exchange between consultants. This included some work in Navisworks for clash detection between models• Structural co-ordination of the proposed works and existing modified works on the overall scheme, including attending site meetings to resolve design issues and develop structural / architectural scheme• Identify opportunities for more efficient architectural / structural design processes to achieve better outcomes in the built environment

While working with this medium sized practice (25 people). My latest project focus has been acting as the lead design consultant on an IKEA store in Canberra. My initial role was to take a sketch design proposal that was set up by the client and develop the site plan layout. Once a site layout was locked in I then began the process of producing a package for development approval. While this process was being undertaken there was a builder engaged, to whom Leffler Simes were nominated, as part of a construction management team that would closely work with the client’s externally engaged project manager. A project cost of approximately $37m dollars was approved and the store footprint was approximately 26,000sqm.Construction drawings were packaged using Revit and it was compulsory that all design team consultants (except the civil engineers) co-ordinated and produced their documentation using Revit. The construction program was very tight and from the beginning of civil works on site to the date of completion was approximately 12 months. My role as project architect and team leader gave me the responsibilities of managing the duties of anywhere between 2-4 staff at any time.Duties-• Managing staff duties and deadlines as project team leader for the architects.• As design team leader, co-ordinating consultants layouts and directing any changes as a result of clashes or clients design standards.• Developing an architectural package of drawings, specifications and schedules through various stages of a project as highlighted above.• Engaging directly with planning consultants, local authority managers, clients project managers, various design team consultants, contractors and directly with subcontractors.• Representing the architectural practice in design team meetings and site visits, including meetings with sub contractors and undertaking site walks and inspections.

The Majority of projects I worked on while at this large sized practice (60-70 people) were Educational. Primary schools projects as part of the BER scheme. Most jobs consisted of extensions to existing schools (resource centres and sports halls) but I also worked on the design and tender stage for a new large scale school consisting of classrooms, sports hall, science and engineering blocks, arts & drama, woodwork and metalwork blocks, teachers facilities, administrative facilities and various outdoor recreational & circulation spaces. All of the projects were to specific standards and stringent timelines.; Producing GA's & layouts from Sketch Design Stage up to Construction for various BER State & High school projects throughout QueenslandSolving Architectural Problems with details & through discussion with a team how to solve design and planning problemsFurther to requests from clients or contractors trying to refine designs in order to reduce building and labour costDuties-• Producing GA’s & layouts from Sketch Design Stage up to Construction for various BER State & High school projects throughout Queensland• Solving Architectural Problems with details & through discussion with a team how to solve design and planning problems• Further to requests from clients or contractors trying to refine designs in order to reduce building and labour cost

While working for this medium sized practice (30 people) on a 6 month contract the main project I worked on was care of the elderly home approx. €15M. consisting of four zones of accommodation for the elderly over 2 floors with allocated living facilities & private outdoor areas for each zone. There was also therapy, nursing, rehabilitation and various other specialised treatment rooms located in the building. The contract was part of a new government contract which required Architectural practices to produce all stages of drawings (Masterplans, GA's, 1:20 Detailed sections, 1:5 Details, service layouts, schedules & RDS's) and documentation (schedules, RDS's & specifications) before the project was sent for tender. As a result project time management was a priority while also trying to achieve superior design values and environmental standards.; Producing GA's & layouts for tender packages for a design-build contract for the Department of the EnvironmentAttaining performance specs. and design criteria for building systems through correspondence with contractorsModifying building materials to achieve low energy standards Solving Architectural Problems with detailsProducing various schedules and data sheets to comply with consultants recommendationsDuties-• Producing GA’s & layouts for tender packages for a design-build contract for the Department of the Environment• Attaining performance specs. and design criteria for building systems through correspondence with contractors• Modifying building materials to achieve low energy standards • Solving Architectural Problems with details• Producing various schedules and data sheets to comply with consultants recommendations

Dublin 3, Ireland

I worked on one main project with this practice that was a mixed use residential/commercial project approx. €250+ million. It varied from small density 2-3 story apartment blocks to high density 5-6 towers with ground floor commercial / enterprise units. All the different stages of the project required different building systems from Masonry to timber / steel framework systems and finally precast concrete panels. As a result all the different stages required different designs constraints (mainly acoustic) and structural and fire standards.Duties-• Producing GA’s & layouts for planning and tender packages• Revisions to drawings• Solving Architectural Problems with details• Creating fire cert. drawings for consultation• General office duties
