THE BLACKWING STORY: Blackwing pencils were originally produced in the 1930s and were used by some of the most creative minds at the time, including John Steinbeck, Chuck Jones and more. In 1998 after some corporate acquisitions Blackwing pencils were discontinued and production ceased. Blackwing enthusiasts soon started seizing up any available stock they could find and eventually caused individual pencils to spike upwards of $40 per pencil on websites like Amazon and eBay.
