    In the Ebola virus response in eastern DRC, there was agreement that complex social factors were contributing to the spread, however, the comprehension of Ebola prevention and treatment messages had not been measured. I partnered with Translators without Borders (TWB) and Universite Libre des Pays des Grands Lacs (ULPGL) over a 6-week engagement to conduct a rapid comprehension study in Goma, where preparations were already taking place for the virus to spread. Methods: survey, direct… Show more In the Ebola virus response in eastern DRC, there was agreement that complex social factors were contributing to the spread, however, the comprehension of Ebola prevention and treatment messages had not been measured. I partnered with Translators without Borders (TWB) and Universite Libre des Pays des Grands Lacs (ULPGL) over a 6-week engagement to conduct a rapid comprehension study in Goma, where preparations were already taking place for the virus to spread. Methods: survey, direct observation, focus groups, mobile data collection via Kobo. The research found that the urban population of Goma was not fully understanding Ebola virus messages in French and standard Swahili. Messages translated into the local dialect of Swahili (Goma) were best understood. The Ebola virus response is now better informed to redesign and test risk communication and community engagement (RCCE) resources to increase the rate of comprehension and reduce the rate of risky behaviors. I also presented a webinar to an Ebola virus response RCCE working group.The work was conducted in partnership with the International Rescue Committee, UNICEF Communication for Development, the Ministry of Health at the Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Elrha's Humanitarian Innovation Fund, and the Netherlands' Ministry of Foreign Affairs. I partnered with Translators without Borders (TWB) in Bangladesh to design a workflow and related procedures for knowledge management and monitoring of training programs. Methods included process flowcharts and performance indicators.Rather than extensive written directions, staff now have an easy-to-understand visual diagram that maps important details for the entire work stream of a training program and documents its impact. I partnered with TWB in Cox’s Bazar over a 3-month engagement to design and conduct a language needs and comprehension study with a representative sample of refugees in Kutupalong-Balukhali camp, one of the largest in the world. Methods included interviews and mobile data collection via KoboToolbox. Humanitarian aid workers now have a base of quantitative data to ask further questions for deeper insights. The humanitarian response in Cox’s Bazar is now equipped with recommendations for how to approach refugees based on their needs and preferences. Interactions can now be more effective and more respectful of refugees. The methods and tools developed are now replicated globally everywhere TWB operates. The work was conducted in partnership with BBC Media Action, Internews, the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DFID), International Organization for Migration (IOM), European Union Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid (ECHO), and the Government of Bangladesh Office of Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commission (RRRC).
