In the Ebola virus response in eastern DRC, there was agreement that complex social factors were contributing to the spread, however, the comprehension of Ebola prevention and treatment messages had not been measured. I partnered with Translators without Borders (TWB) and Universite Libre des Pays des Grands Lacs (ULPGL) over a 6-week engagement to conduct a rapid comprehension study in Goma, where preparations were already taking place for the virus to spread. Methods: survey, direct… Show more In the Ebola virus response in eastern DRC, there was agreement that complex social factors were contributing to the spread, however, the comprehension of Ebola prevention and treatment messages had not been measured. I partnered with Translators without Borders (TWB) and Universite Libre des Pays des Grands Lacs (ULPGL) over a 6-week engagement to conduct a rapid comprehension study in Goma, where preparations were already taking place for the virus to spread. Methods: survey, direct observation, focus groups, mobile data collection via Kobo. The research found that the urban population of Goma was not fully understanding Ebola virus messages in French and standard Swahili. Messages translated into the local dialect of Swahili (Goma) were best understood. The Ebola virus response is now better informed to redesign and test risk communication and community engagement (RCCE) resources to increase the rate of comprehension and reduce the rate of risky behaviors. I also presented a webinar to an Ebola virus response RCCE working group.The work was conducted in partnership with the International Rescue Committee, UNICEF Communication for Development, the Ministry of Health at the Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Elrha's Humanitarian Innovation Fund, and the Netherlands' Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
