The SALT Center is a center on campus designed to help students with learning disabilities or challenges. SALT offers tutoring, psychological services, and weekly one-on-one meetings with a learning specialist who helps them with academic and personal skills. My job as a graduate assistant is to offer additional support to students outside of their usual meetings with their learning specialists. I meet with students, upon the request of their learning specialist, to help them with organization, time management, study skills, communication skills, as well as to help them understand SALT and University of Arizona systems. I also do appointment coverage when learning specialists are unavailable for the day.Some of my other duties include updating or creating new organizational forms and performing phone and email outreach to current and wait-listed students.

Pathways for Academic Student Success (more frequently referred to as PASS) is a program at the University of Arizona to help students get off of academic probation. When a student has less than a 2.0 GPA, they are put on academic probation, meaning that they can't graduate or apply for certain majors until they improve their GPA. As a peer advisor, I meet one-on-one with 18 students, meeting with each individual once every other week. At the meetings, we discuss what problems they might be having and what the best way to overcome that problem is. For this position, I have to be knowledgable about campus resources, understand various learning and study styles, and be patient with and non-judgemental of the students, no matter their circumstance.

ASEMS (Arizona’s Science, Engineering, and Math Scholars) TRiO is a tutoring and program designed to help STEM students who are first-generation, and/or disabled. This program consists of upper division students tutoring and mentoring freshmen and sophomore STEM students. I interned with this program as a Tutoring Coordinator during my second semester of graduate school. My responsibilities included interviewing and training new tutors, matching students with tutors based on shared availability and subject need, and assisting tutors in resolving student concerns.

While taking a class on dendrochronology at the University of Arizona, I decided I wanted to become more active in that field of work. I talked with Dr. Margaret Evans, a researcher at the tree ring lab and a former professor, about a project she is working on that uses past tree ring records to predict how different species in the southwest United States will react to climate change.In this position, I date tree samples, measure ring widths, and prepare core samples for dating and measurement. All of the dates and measurements go into a central database so they can be observed to try to find patterns and trends.

Blue Chip is a co-curricular leadership program at the University of Arizona. Throughout my time in this program, I had many opportunities and experiences that helped me grow and develop personally and professionally. I completed many leadership classes, learned to focus my leadership around environmental preservation, participated on a team case competition, lead two teams of first year students through their first semester of college, worked on the Blue Chip newsletter, planned events for my teams and other students, presented on my leadership research and presentation, and experienced communicating with superiors, peers, and those who I lead. Though I technically graduated from the program in May of 2016, I continued to be active with the program through my graduation from college in December of 2016.

New Start is a summer program at the University of Arizona that is designed to help incoming freshmen transition from high school to college. Each student takes a core class and a leadership class, and they have a support system of current University of Arizona students who help them through their transition. Students have a peer advisor who teaches their leadership class. This summer, I was the coordinator for half of the New Start peer advisors. My job was to supervise these per advisors and to help run the New Start program. In this position, I supervised the Peer Advisors (and to a lesser extent, the Tutors and Resident Assistants), planned, organized, and ran the Involvement Fair, facilitated daily meetings with the Peer Advisors and weekly meetings with the whole staff, collaborated with co-workers, supervisors, and community partners to create events and projects for students and staff, organized and facilitated the community service committee, budgeted many aspects of the program, and assisted the student staff with personal and professional growth and development.

I worked with students in an English 101 class over the summer. I helped out in the classroom with answering questions and giving lessons. Outside the classroom, I held one on one tutoring hours to help students with reading comprehension and essay writing. I ended this position because the program only runs during the summer.
