Profile bio

About Maija Faehnle

I am interested in developing and implementing good practices of collaboration, governance, knowledge and business management, especially in relation to urban sustainability and resilience. Currently I work as manager of the Just Transformation group at the Finnish Environment Institute (Syke), Societal Change Unit. I have been working with development of measures for improving social urban development and collaborative governance practices for solving contested problems. For example, in the 'Urban civic activism as resource for the metropolis' project, we helped public sector organizations update their practices to better support and make use of the potentials arising by new forms of civic activism and collaborative economy. I have coordinated co-creation of a roadmap on developing collaborative governance in Finland, as part of the Finnish Strategic Research Council project CORE (collaboration.fi). My background is in collaborative planning and R&D related to urban areas. I have been leading projects on collaboration, software development, intercultural urban planning and knowledge integration. I’m oriented to practice but I’m also familiar with applied research. In my PhD thesis I developed methods for evaluating and designing collaborative planning processes in urban contexts. In my free time I enjoy life with my family and friends, do sports and go outdoors. I also take part in the activities of the Finnish open democracy network (Avoin demokratia-verkosto) and informal civic activities such as science activism at Tiederoihu, organising events for people in all ages. Specialities: collaboration, co-creation, governance, participation, communities, self-organisation, civic activism, deliberative democracy, collaborative economy, evaluation, social innovation, action research, citizen science/co-research, urban sustainability, sustainability transformations

Listed skills include Urban Planning, Participatory Planning, Social Sciences, Sharing Economy, and 45 others.
