Access to housing, food, and healthcare are fundamental human rights. Yet, a growing number of people face homelessness across the United States. The COVID-19 pandemic has contributed to this problem due to rising unemployment rates, healthcare costs, and unaffordable housing prices. Multiple stakeholders interact with and support unsheltered individuals who sometimes choose to stay in a specific community for varying reasons including safety and comfort. In this research, data is collected from non-profits, for-profits, and unsheltered individuals in the Linda Vista neighborhood in San Diego, CA, where the homelessness crisis is growing. In order to develop a comprehensive view of the problem, we used a multi-method approach and conducted a community assessment survey of non-profit organizations serving the neighborhood, interviews with staff and managers of local private businesses such as restaurants and minimarts, and interviews with individuals with lived experiences with homelessness. This intersectional approach allows us to understand and address the challenges faced by all stakeholders simultaneously. Based on these results we identify and recommend hyperlocal, community-based, strategies to alleviate some of the concerns faced by unsheltered individuals in a more targeted and cohesive manner.+ Wrote a grant proposal and received $35,000 in funding from the Urgent Challenges Collective and the Mulvaney Foundation to research and address homelessness and food insecurity at the local level.+ Built inclusive relationships with impacted populations, community organizations, local businesses, and government officials to bridge gaps for collaboration and change.+ Formed and led a small team in survey design and implementation, data analysis, and reporting.+ Co-created a digital space to present findings and recommendations, inform stakeholders, and help guide future decisions both locally and nationally.
