PhD Candidate in the department of Developmental Bioengineering at the University of Twente.Developing strategies to create scalable, bioengineered tissues with inherent high density capillary-like networks using a variety of droplet microfluidic tools.

To finish my Master's degree, I carried out research at the Nanobiophysics group (NBP) at the University of Twente. The goal of the project was to develop an in vitro Alzheimer's disease model to study the interplay of model neuron cells (SH-SY5Y), monocyte (THP-1) cells and amyloid beta plaques. I designed a hybrid hydrogel co-culture system that enabled the encapsulation and growth of the three components and allowed for 3D real-time visualization. By using confocal fluorescence microscopy and biomolecular techniques I analyzed the viability, proliferation and interaction between the components over time.

As a teaching assistant at the University of Twente I have been involved in a variety of practicals and modules. My activities ranged from assisting in cell biological and biochemical lab practicals to serving as a tutor for groups in a project centered on biorobotics.

To finish my Bachelor in Biomedical Engineering I performed a research project within the Developmental Bioengineering group (DBE) at the University of Twente. The project was focused on discovering the effects of the Wnt3a pathway on SOX9 activity in chondrocytes. I utilized the following techniques to show that the Wnt3a pathway indeed had an effect: cell culture, transfection, confocal microscopy and fluorescent recovery after photobleaching (FRAP).

As part of my Master's degree in Biomedical Engineering, I carried out a 6 month research project at the Khademhosseini Lab at the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology. In this project, I designed several types of microneedles, incorporated hydrogels within them and tested their release profile and toxicity in vitro using Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells (HUVECs). The techniques I utilized included micromolding, solvent evaporation based microneedle fabrication using several polymers, cell culture, fluorescence microscopy, live-dead assays, and metabolic assays.

As chairman of the University of Twente basketball club, Arriba, I was responsible for leading a board of four people that heads a club of over 100 students and university employees. Tasks varied from day-to-day activities and organizing events for members to meetings with other university boards/committees and the Dutch national basketball federation.
