I am a researcher-practitioner and an award-winning documentary storyteller, currently working in the School of Geography, Environment and Earth Sciences at Te Herenga Waka / Victoria University of Wellington as a Post-Doctoral Fellow. I hold a PhD in Film with Human Geography from VUW (Dean's List), where I produced a written exegesis as well as a feature-length documentary film as my final research output. Utilising a transformative research paradigm informed by feminist epistemology, my research reframed tropicalised tourism narratives in Utila, Honduras, by challenging colonial continuities and the violent erasure of particular peoples, spaces, and species on the island. I was recently awarded a 3-year Marsden Fast-Start research grant, and am currently working on the Aotearoa Big Things research project: https://majazonjic.com/big-things-aotearoa/. My research interests include: Effects of tourism development on people, place, and more-than-human geographies; Innovative and creative-based approaches to social and environmental injustice; Media and filmic representations of race, gender, class, and sexuality; Transformative, decolonial, and feminist research praxis; Interdisciplinary documentary storytelling; Silences, violence, and power; and Critical pedagogy of care and empathy. I work in both academic and industry spaces, speak Croatian, English, Spanish (and learning te reo Māori), and have lived in Croatia, Canada, and Honduras before moving to Aotearoa / New Zealand, where I currently live.
