Mary Lou was both an architect and an executive at Facebook / Oculus leading various efforts including a continued transformation of the virtual reality experience. She had the fundamental insight that a move to liquid crystal based systems from OLED was critical to consumer grade product and pushed it's introduction into Oculus Quest 2 - the best selling VR product ever made smashing all sales records in VR and delivering billions of dollars in revenue. She invented and created new breakthrough systems including these low-persistence, high frame rate, rich pixel density screens and optical systems. She also pioneered a form of augmented reality with true foveal vision >180 degree FOV, large eye-box, embedded eye-tracking and alpha-channel mixed reality ability blackening selectively part of the scene all in a sunglasses form factor for low cost high volume production. This was with a novel way to seamlessly tile pixel groups on the back of the retina as if the retina at software selective resolution per pixel-group. In addition she led Facebook's first foray into brain computer interfaces (prior to any other efforts).

Mary Lou led display and hardware efforts throughout Google, and reported to Google co-founder Sergey Brin. While there she played a critical role in Google Glass, several Android programs and also founded and directed two “Moonshot” programs in Google [x]. She was responsible for invention and architecture, R&D (SW and HW engineering) and also business strategy, product management, operations, supply chain, manufacturing, go-to-market and strategic partnerships. One program was reported by the WSJ to be large scale tile-able displays - aka "Lego-TV" the other hasn't been reported to date.

Mary Lou founded Pixel Qi, the world’s only fabless display developer, as a spin-off of One Laptop per Child to extend and commercialize the breakthrough screen and power management architecture she invented and developed for the $100 laptop. She built a business to develop new screen architectures ready for mass production with less than a year of development time (display innovation typically takes a decade or more to reach fruition). Pixel Qi technology shipped several million units with >10x lower power consumption and sunlight readability while preserving color, video and image quality. As CEO, she oversaw business strategy, product management, R&D (SW and HW engineering), operations, raising funds, supply chain, manufacturing, go-to-market and strategic partnerships.

Jepsen launched this non-profit organization with Nicholas Negroponte, and was its only employee for its first year. Jepsen invented the fundamental laptop architecture and a new screen and convinced some of world’s largest manufacturers to produce it. She oversaw sequential development from prototypes to scale-manufacture of the innovative underlying components, software, content, IP, firmware, and the entire system; managing over 1000 people. Millions of units shipped to nearly every country transforming opportunities for children in the developing world. Multi-billion dollar revenue went through OLPC and this catalyzed $30B of revenue for its for-profit partners. Its lasting legacy is in changing what a minister of education can do for a countries children. The CEO of Google is widely quote as saying the Chromebook is the grandchild of One Laptop per Child.

Jepsen joined the faculty of the MIT Media Lab where she initially co-founded One Laptop per Child and began the Nomadic Displays group. She drove work in a variety of areas including consumer electronics, software systems, display architecture, and user interfaces particularly for pre-literate children.

Responsible for overall architecture and design of Intel's next generation HDTV products - including optics, liquid crystals, testing, characterization, performance improvement, design and integration of electronics, ASICs, and manufacturing.

Created microdisplay technology for virtual reality, augmented reality, wearables, and flat screen HDTVs. Shipped breakthrough product in all these areas working primarily with Asian manufacturers and brand names throughout the globe. Served as overall system architect, led design and integration of electronics, ASICs, optics, liquid crystals, optical engine, TV makers, head-mounted displays, cellphone makers, all for optimized manufacturability in product.

Part of early Lumileds effort contributing to breakthroughs in efficiency for LED devices now included in billions of devices. Developed Philips single-panel and triple-panel (500+ frame per second) liquid crystal on silicon devices and front- and rear- projection systems.
