Mary Lou was both an architect and an executive at Facebook / Oculus leading various efforts including a continued transformation of the virtual reality experience. She had the fundamental insight that a move to liquid crystal based systems from OLED was critical to consumer grade product and pushed it's introduction into Oculus Quest 2 - the best selling VR product ever made smashing all sales records in VR and delivering billions of dollars in revenue. She invented and created new breakthrough systems including these low-persistence, high frame rate, rich pixel density screens and optical systems. She also pioneered a form of augmented reality with true foveal vision >180 degree FOV, large eye-box, embedded eye-tracking and alpha-channel mixed reality ability blackening selectively part of the scene all in a sunglasses form factor for low cost high volume production. This was with a novel way to seamlessly tile pixel groups on the back of the retina as if the retina at software selective resolution per pixel-group. In addition she led Facebook's first foray into brain computer interfaces (prior to any other efforts).
