Makai is currently an Academic, Policy Analyst and Human Resource personnel in Nigeria. Previously, he was a Legislative Intern (focusing on governance & institutions) with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), of The Federal Republic of Nigeria. In 2015, as a junior research fellow, Makai was awarded a French Institute for Research in Africa (IFRA-Nigeria) grant to conduct research on invisible violence in seven local government areas of Jigawa and Gombe states, Northeast Nigeria, at the heart of the boko haram insurgency. This singular event prompted the publication of a book “An Identity Identified: Jukun Nation and their Neighbours in Nigeria” which is currently on Amazon.Makai has five years of experience in the non-profit sector focusing on policy-centered research. Makai holds a Master's degree in History (with a specialization in African History and Development) from the University of Ibadan and a Bachelor’s degree in History from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. His professional interests include governance, peace studies, conflict resolution, local economic development, and institution building and strengthening. Makai is a member of the Historical Society of Nigeria (HSN), a research fellow, and a 2015 IFRA-Nigeria research grant awardee. Through these experiences, Makai has developed skills in research, policy analysis, promoting research uptake, and management (administrative & project). Makai enjoys working in new environments, the arts, reading, and soccer, and is passionate about building strong institutions.
