Profile bio

About Makana Brooks

During my time at the University of Virginia, I double majored in History and Youth and Social Innovation. These two disciplines have profoundly shaped my academic, professional, and personal aspirations. My focus in history has been centered on the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, particularly 11th-century medical and scientific advancement as well as the contemporary sociopolitical landscapes of Arab countries. Complementing this, I studied Modern Standard Arabic (fus7a) at UVA for three years. I continue to hone my Arabic skills, currently studying colloquial Arabic at the Semitic Languages Institute in East Jerusalem, Palestine. I have extensive experience in youth work, beginning with a yearlong stint as an AmeriCorps member serving at a middle school in Queens, NY. This passion continued throughout my undergraduate years, where my major and extracurricular involvements focused heavily on international education and youth-centered policy. Notably, I worked as a research assistant for the Batten School's Humanitarian Collaborative, concentrating on early childhood development and education in emergencies (EIE).I am currently in East Jerusalem as a Fulbright Grantee in the English Teaching Assistant program. I have deferred an offer for an M.Phil. program in International Peace Studies at Trinity College Dublin for the following academic year (2025-2026). I am excited to leverage my educational background, language skills, and commitment to fostering mutual understanding as I navigate these new opportunities. Through my work, I aim to build meaningful connections and contribute positively to the communities I engage with, continuing my journey of learning and growth.
