About Makana Brooks
During my time at the University of Virginia, I double majored in History and Youth and Social Innovation. These two disciplines have profoundly shaped my academic, professional, and personal aspirations. My focus in history has been centered on the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, particularly 11th-century medical and scientific advancement as well as the contemporary sociopolitical landscapes of Arab countries. Complementing this, I studied Modern Standard Arabic (fus7a) at UVA for three years. I continue to hone my Arabic skills, currently studying colloquial Arabic at the Semitic Languages Institute in East Jerusalem, Palestine. I have extensive experience in youth work, beginning with a yearlong stint as an AmeriCorps member serving at a middle school in Queens, NY. This passion continued throughout my undergraduate years, where my major and extracurricular involvements focused heavily on international education and youth-centered policy. Notably, I worked as a research assistant for the Batten School's Humanitarian Collaborative, concentrating on early childhood development and education in emergencies (EIE).I am currently in East Jerusalem as a Fulbright Grantee in the English Teaching Assistant program. I have deferred an offer for an M.Phil. program in International Peace Studies at Trinity College Dublin for the following academic year (2025-2026). I am excited to leverage my educational background, language skills, and commitment to fostering mutual understanding as I navigate these new opportunities. Through my work, I aim to build meaningful connections and contribute positively to the communities I engage with, continuing my journey of learning and growth.

Research Assistant
Research assistant in the University of Virginia's Humanitarian Collaborative, an initiative housed under the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy. My particular research focus was on early childhood development in areas of humanitarian crisis, with a few focus regions including Syria, Bangladesh, and the U.S.-Mexico border. My research has a thematic emphasis on providing our youngest citizens with the resources needed to tell their own stories. In this role, I regularly assisted a university professor in compiling resources necessary for academic and practical work. Additionally, I engage in exploratory research concerning how certain humanitarian crises -- such as the Syrian civil war and the COVID-19 pandemic -- affect early childhood development and resources for development. I also attended and made record of meetings and summits concerning global early childhood development and early childhood education.
Summer Americorps Member
In this temporary AmeriCorps position, I served as a classroom leader for students from sixth to eighth grade at a summer enrichment program in the Rosedale neighborhood of Kansas City, Kansas. Our curriculum covered communication arts, financial literacy, physical education, nutrition and gardening. I also helped facilitate program-wide activities serving students from Kindergarten to eighth grade.
Tutor
In my first year of university, I worked as a virtual and in-person tutor through the America Reads initiative, a national program sponsored by the Federal Work Study program. In this position, I tutored students from ages four to twelve in a wide variety of subjects, including basic literacy, comprehension, basic numeracy, and fluency in reading. I worked in various capacities: I served as a classroom assistant in a virtual second grade classroom, I worked as a private tutor for students identified by the local public school system as needing extra support, and I worked in-person in a COVID-19 learning pod designated for refugee and asylum-seeking students in Charlottesville, Virginia, an International Rescue Committee city.
Americorps Member
Prior to enrolling in college, I participated in the AmeriCorps program City Year, working at a middle school in Queens, New York primarily serving first and second generation immigrant children and English as a New Language (ENL) learners. I served as a class assistant in two eighth grade classrooms, facilitated literacy intervention groups with students identified as needing extra support, and facilitated after school enrichment programming. In addition to this work, I also routinely participated in physical projects, such as painting murals and building school infrastructure, in K-12 schools throughout the five boroughs of New York City.
