Mal Hiley has over 40 years’ experience in construction and company management and joined family company Baker & Provan as Managing Director in 2020. Baker & Provan was started by Mal's father-in-law, Arthur Baker and his Army mate, Don Provan in 1946. The company has developed a range of heavy engineering capabilities combining fitting, machining and fabrication and is a valued supplier to the Australian Department of Defence through both equipment manufacture and ongoing maintenance services to the Navy. Baker & Provan's other key market sectors are rail, resources and infrastructure. Mal is excited to lead Baker & Provan into its next stage of development. From 2019 to 2022, Mal was also a Senior Adviser to Gamuda Australia as it established in the Australian infrastructure market. Gamuda has an excellent reputation for innovation and project delivery across a range of infrastructure projects from rail, metro, tunneling, highways and water supply and has now been successful in winning major works in both metro and highway. Prior to joining Gamuda, Mal was Managing Director of Waterway Constructions following the founding of Waterway with Jim Millar in 1993.Mal's experience also includes 16 years in government with the Maritime Services Board and the Waterways Authority which led to Mal’s instrumental role in the staff and management buyout of the wharf maintenance section of the Waterways Authority resulting in the formation of Waterway Constructions together with 10 worker-shareholders.Mal is inspired by the possibilities of collaborative effort and Waterway’s ultimate growth to become a leading Australian maritime construction contractor was testament to his ability to build and encourage a successful team through his leadership and personal engagement. Mal has also been instrumental in a number of acquisitions as well as the sale of Waterway Constructions to Keller in 2010.Mal established the Sydney Harbour Maritime Forum in 1999 to represent the interests of Sydney Harbour’s maritime industry to government through the Department of Planning, Urban Growth, Port Authority of NSW, Chamber of Commerce and community consultative groups. Through Mal’s leadership, the needs of waterfront industry were well understood by government and incorporated into the Bays Precinct planning process. Mal has also had a significant involvement in volunteering his time to not-for-profit organisations.
